Description

Rising against the Chennai skyline, the dome of the Madras High Court has stood for more than a century as one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

In 1844, it took on a new role, a powerful beam began to sweep from its summit, guiding ships through dark waters and into the safety of the harbour. It replaced the first lighthouse on the roof of Fort St. George, carrying forward a duty that was as much about trust as it was about navigation.

Night after night, its revolving glow cut across the Bay of Bengal, a silent promise to sailors that they had reached மதராஸ் (Madharas). A promise kept for decades, until the city itself grew bright enough to light the way.
